Materials & Durability

One of the critical things to consider when buying a mattress is the type of materials the manufacturer use and whether the mattress will stand up to the test of time and thousands of nights’ sleep. Let’s take a look at the various materials that Nectar and Casper use to construct their mattresses.

The 11-inch Nectar Memory Foam Mattress features four-layer foam construction, designed to provide you with the ultimate night’s sleep. The top layer encompasses the Tencel Cooling Cover, which helps keep you cool while you sleep due to its heat-wicking properties and is resistant to bed bugs and dust mites, and 1 inch of Quilted Gel Memory Foam. This memory foam contours to your body while you sleep, making this mattress an ideal option for all types of sleepers, from those who sleep on their sides to those who sleep on their stomachs. This Gel Memory Foam layer also provides loft and circulation.

Beneath the Quilted Gel Memory Foam is the 3-inch Gel Memory Foam layer. Nectar designed this layer to distribute your weight evenly as you sleep, providing you with more support as well as recovery and bounce.

The third layer is the 1.5-inch Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam layer. Nectar markets this layer as a recovery foam, “providing crucial rebound and bounce.” This layer is unique among all direct-to-consumer mattress companies, Nectar claims, adding that it's the best solution for contouring to the body's pressure points.

Lastly, the fourth layer is the Breathable Base Layer. This dense 5.5-inch layer draws in fresh air through specially made channels, helping you sleep comfortably. Nectar insists this strong and highly functional base layer is a key reason the company is able to offer a 365-day trial period and guarantee lasting forever.

The Nectar mattress, whose queen size weighs 74 pounds, is described as “medium firm” or "just right." Nectar reports that The Nectar Memory Foam Mattress scores a 5.5 to 7.5, with a "1" representing too soft and "10" representing too firm.

Nectar vs. Casper: Nectar claims its Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam layer provides for bounce and rebound while being unique in the direct-to-consumer mattress market.

Casper

Casper has introduced The Casper Mattress, The Wave Mattress and The Essential Mattress. The Casper Mattress is the company's original mattress, and The Wave Mattress represents the latest and greatest from Casper. The Wave Mattress costs a pretty penny—roughly twice as much as The Casper Mattress. The Essential Mattress is the company's most-affordable mattress.

Casper's The Wave Mattress is a five-layer medium-firmness mattress that is 13 inches thick. It starts with a 7-inch base made from either stable and supportive foam or softer, bouncier springs, the latter used in the hybrid model. The spring base layer is resilient and boasts top-notch edge support, making it easy, especially for senior citizens, to get in and out of a Casper hybrid mattress.

The Wave Mattress' 1.5-inch layer of gel pods provide targeted support for the hips and shoulders, which tend to sink more in mattresses compared with the rest of the body. Next, another layer of pressure-relieving memory foam, also running 1.5 inches thick, provides deep cushion. A 1.5-inch breathable latex foam layer is topped by a velvety soft comfort foam layer.

The Wave Mattress is celebrated for its ability to provide a cooler sleep. Its outstanding temperature regulation hinges partly on airflow-enhancing perforations. The Wave Mattress is an exceptionally built mattress and is clearly Casper's most advanced mattress. The mattress' gel pods align along the spine, helping offer a restful sleep. A queen-size Wave Mattress weighs 109 pounds for the foam-base mattress and 113 pounds for the hybrid mattress.

The Casper Mattress, meanwhile, is decked out in four layers of premium foam that offer a comfortable level of support. The Casper Mattress' top layer is constructed from breathable comfort foam. This 1.5-inch open-cell foam layer adds plushness along with a bit of bounce. A pressure-relieving memory foam layer of 1.5 inches is followed by a 2-inch layer offering zoned support and firmness where needed for the body.

Just as with The Wave Mattress, the base layer for The Casper Mattress comes with either 7 inches of firm foam or the hybrid model's springs. A queen-size Casper Mattress model weighs 85 pounds for the foam-base model and 106 pounds for the hybrid version. This mattress is rated for medium-firmness.

Casper's The Essential Mattress is the company's least-expensive mattress. The standard Casper base layer, available only in foam for The Essential Mattress, is topped by a pressure-relief foam layer running 2 inches high. The topmost layer, also 2 inches thick, promotes high breathability along with softness and some bounce. A queen-size model weighs 75 pounds.

Mattress Materials and Certifications

Many modern mattress are built using human-made materials that can be harmful to sensitive sleepers. Let's zero in on the materials and certifications earned by Nectar and Casper.

All the foam that Nectar uses in its mattresses is certified. The foam has a CertiPUR-US certification. This means that the foam does not contain any ozone depleters. It also does not contain mercury, lead, PBDE flame retardants or formaldehyde. Additionally, the Tencel natural fiber cover has received an OEKO-TEK certification, meaning it is made of the most stringent fabric.

The materials that Nectar uses also help with temperature control. The wicking materials help keep you cool in the middle of the night so you won’t have to worry about overheating. Furthermore, the materials protect against bed bugs and dust mites, ensuring that they never become a problem if you use the mattress.

Casper

Like the Nectar mattress, the foam in Casper mattresses is Certi-PUR-US certified. The Wave Mattress, The Caster Mattress and The Essential Mattress do not contain any ozone-depleting substances and meet the specifications set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission Low VOC.

Price, Shipping and Trial Period

Some key factors to consider when comparing Nectar vs. Casper mattresses is not only price of each mattress but the companies' shipping and trial periods.

Nectar

A twin-sized Nectar mattress starts at $399. Prices increase from there, costing as much as $899 for King and California King. You can also purchase add-ons such as one of the company's bed frames along with a mattress protector, sheets and weighted blanket.

Nectar offers free shipping and returns on its mattresses. The company also provides a 365-day home trial. If you don't like your bed at any point within the first year, the company reports that a representative will work with you to return, donate or dispose of it properly.

Nectar will ship you your mattress to your home in a protective carrier, making it easy to carry up and down stairwells. The mattress is rolled up. So once you receive it, you can cut the protective plastic and allow it to unroll. Nectar mattresses have a "forever warranty.”

Casper

Casper's The Wave Mattress starts at $1,345 for a twin, with The Casper Mattress costing from $595 and The Essential Mattress running from $395, both for twins. The company offers free shipping and free returns for their mattresses. The setup process is a bit more extensive with the Casper mattress, although the company provides in-home setup options.

Furthermore, the trial period for Casper mattresses is not as extended as it is for a Nectar mattress. The trial period for any Casper mattress model is 100 days. If you don’t like it within this time frame, the company will provide you with a full refund.

Lastly, the warranty is not as extensive for the Casper mattress, either. Customers receive a 10-year guarantee when purchasing a Casper mattress.

Nectar Vs. Casper Final Thoughts

The Nectar Memory Foam Mattress and Casper's The Wave Mattress may be ideal if you are looking for exceptional pressure release and a deeper memory foam “hug.” If you’re someone who struggles with overheating when you sleep, you, too, may too want to consider these very cooling mattresses.

If you feel as though you need additional spine support, we recommend that you check out The Casper Mattress, which does not provide as much of a cradle. You’ll receive enhanced spine support, as it will feel as though you’re sleeping more on top of the mattress rather than in it.

A benefit of Casper mattresses is that the company offers their products in stores, something that Nectar does not do. So you could find a local store near you to test a mattress you have your eye on before making your decision.

If you're still on the fence about which mattress to choose, the dealbreaker between the two may just be the price. Customers receive significantly more value in the Nectar mattress. The lower cost, longer trial period and forever warranty could shift the ball into Nectar's court for many shoppers.
